Diving at the Colourful Cave
– Martinique (0-25m)
This is a great place for diving, photography and underwater biology enthusiasts to enjoy this unmissable spot in Martinique.
What is the Colourful Cave in Martinique?
The Colourful Cave is aptly named! A beautiful drop off of about 6 metres leads visitors to a cave that is entirely covered with multicoloured sponges. Other species such as corals and tube worms have made their home here.
What level to dive at the Colourful Cave?
La colourfull cave is a site suitable for your first dives, including first dives, and for all levels, whether it is a French or PADI higher level. You can also practice snorkeling.
What can you see when you dive at the Colourful Cave?
Beware … at the Colourful Cave, you are being watched!
We will tie up the boat at the foot of the small cliff. Above your head, on the top of the trees, nest some brown pelicans, a protected species in Martinique.
The Colourful Cave wall is so exceptional that it should be protected as well. In our opinion, it should be classified as a work of art!
The entire top of the wall is covered by colonies of orange tube corals which give it two faces: the wall is yellow when the tentacles of these corals are all open. It turns red when all the polyps are retracted.
And the orange-yellow of these corals blends very well with the many colours of the sponges colonising the wall.
And who likes to camouflage themselves on these sponges?
Answer: the frogfish. If you are patient, you may find one. But be careful, it’s not easy to find: the frogfish rests on a sponge whose texture resembles its skin and adapts its colour. A real underwater chameleon!
And if you are lucky enough to see one moving around, watch it carefully: it swims by sucking up water which it throws back to propel itself.

Our Alpha Plongée centre is located on the beach of Grande Anse d’Arlet, about 200m to the right of the pontoon, looking out to sea. We are in the middle of the pedestrian street that runs along the seafront, between the restaurants “Bidjoul” and “Les Arcades”.
If you decide to join us by car, you can park in the large car park which overlooks the road opposite the grocery shop. It is indicated by a large blue sign. To find us, you just have to cross the road and slip between two rows of houses.
